Blood Pressure

Definition

Blood pressure is the force exerted by circulating blood against the walls of blood vessels. It is expressed as two values: systolic pressure (the peak pressure during heart contraction) over diastolic pressure (the pressure between beats when the heart is at rest). Normal blood pressure for adults is generally considered to be below 120/80 mmHg, while hypertension is defined as consistently reading 130/80 mmHg or higher.

Blood pressure is one of the most important vital signs for assessing cardiovascular health. Chronic hypertension is a major risk factor for heart disease, stroke, kidney disease, and other serious conditions. Regular monitoring is essential for managing hypertension and evaluating the effectiveness of lifestyle changes and medication.

Contactless blood pressure estimation using rPPG technology analyzes pulse wave characteristics extracted from facial video, including pulse transit time (PTT) and pulse wave morphology. While contactless BP estimation is not yet equivalent to cuff-based measurement for clinical diagnosis, it shows promise for trend monitoring, screening, and identifying individuals who may benefit from traditional blood pressure assessment.
