Telehealth

Definition

Telehealth is the delivery of healthcare services and information using telecommunications technology. It encompasses a broad range of technologies and services including video consultations, remote patient monitoring, mobile health applications, and asynchronous messaging between patients and providers. Telehealth enables healthcare access regardless of geographic distance.

The adoption of telehealth accelerated dramatically during the COVID-19 pandemic and has since become a permanent fixture of healthcare delivery. Telehealth offers benefits including improved access to care for rural and underserved populations, reduced travel burden for patients, lower healthcare costs, and the ability to provide more frequent touchpoints between visits.

A key limitation of traditional telehealth has been the inability to capture vital signs during virtual visits. rPPG technology addresses this gap by enabling contactless measurement of heart rate, HRV, respiratory rate, SpO2, and blood pressure estimation through the same camera used for the video consultation, enriching the clinical data available to providers during telehealth encounters.
